Ohio licenses driving schools program by program. We hold two, and between them they cover almost everyone who calls us.
For every new driver under 21.
Ohio will not issue a driver license to anyone under 21 until they have completed driver education at a licensed school. Same requirement at 16 or at 20.

Twenty four hours before anyone
touches a steering wheel.
This is the part most families do not expect, and the part the BMV checks first. It is the same syllabus for a nervous sixteen year old and for an adult who has been driving abroad for twenty years.

Five stages. We handle the one
the state will not let you skip.
Ohio's own sequence for a driver under 18. Most people call us in the middle of it and are not sure what comes next. That is normal.
Knowledge test and vision screening
From age 15 years and 6 months. Forty multiple choice questions on road rules and signs, and you need 75 percent to pass. Available in Somali, in text and in audio.
Buy the temporary permit
The TIPIC, bought at a deputy registrar within 60 days of passing. Under 16, a parent, guardian or licensed driving instructor has to be in the passenger seat.
Driver education
Twenty four hours of classroom or online instruction, then eight hours driving with a licensed instructor. You cannot book the test without the certificate. This is us.
Fifty hours of practice
Logged with a supervising adult, at least ten of them at night, on top of the hours you drive with us. Recorded on form BMV 5791 and signed before your test.
Driving and skills test
Booked through BMV online services once you have held the permit at least six months. Bring the permit, the certificate, the affidavit and a roadworthy car.
The same course applies. Ohio asks for the same 24 hours of instruction, 8 hours of driving and 50 hours of practice before it will issue your first license.
No course is required for your first attempt. If you fail the maneuverability or road portion, the abbreviated adult course is required before you can try again.

If Somali is the language you think in, you can learn in it.
Ohio lets you take the written knowledge test in Somali, in text and in audio. What is much harder to find is a licensed school that can teach the course in Somali too. There are three of us in the whole state, and all three are in Columbus.
You still read the road signs in English on test day, and that is part of what we teach. But the rules, the questions and the reasons behind them can be explained in the language you already have.

Most people who call are somewhere they did not expect to be: a parent out of patience, an adult who never learned, or a driver who failed once and stopped trying.
My daughter failed the road test twice with another school. Here they slowed the whole thing down and worked on the maneuverability until she stopped dreading it. She passed in October.
I drove for years before I came to Ohio, but the test here is a different thing. Being able to ask my questions in Somali is the reason I passed the first time.

Does my teenager really need a course?
Yes, if they are under 21. Ohio will not issue a driver license to anyone under 21 who has not completed driver education at a licensed school. It is 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving.
Can the course be taught in Somali?
Yes. Somali is listed on our record with the State of Ohio alongside English. The written knowledge test at the BMV is also available in Somali, in text and in audio.
Road signs are still read in English on test day, and getting comfortable with them is part of the course.
I am over 21 and I failed my driving test.
Then Ohio requires an abbreviated adult driver training course before your second attempt, and we are licensed to run it. Four hours of class followed by four hours behind the wheel with a licensed instructor.

Do the 50 practice hours count toward the course?
No, they are separate. The 50 hours are driving you do with a supervising adult, at least 10 of them at night, logged on form BMV 5791. They are on top of the 8 hours you drive with us.
Where do I take the actual driving test?
At a state driver exam station, booked through BMV online services. We teach the course and the driving; the test itself is run by the state.
